I love the circus

Posted in Family visits, Trip on August 4th, 2015 by c-had – Be the first to comment

A unique aspect of Callaway is its circus. Yes that’s right; it’s a resort with its own circus. The FSU Flying High Circus is one of only two collegiate circuses in the U.S.A. And every summer, they bring the circus to Callaway Gardens.

But they’re not just circus performers. They also serve as the camp counselors for the kids age 7-17. So, Molly could spend the day with her counselors doing lots of fun activities, then go see those same counselors doing acrobatics in the circus after camp. It’s really cool!

We first saw the circus on Sunday afternoon after riding bikes. We missed the Monday circus, but caught it again Thursday and Friday. Here are a taste of some of the acts. Note that this is an acrobatic circus only - you won’t see any elephants, lions, or clowns.

Here’s one of the performers climbing a ladder balanced on the slack rope.

Here’s the double trapeze - two people, one trapeze, talent, strength, practice, and lots of trust. The guy here, Connor, was one of Molly’s counselors.

Double trapeze

These two girls were especially impressive on the lyra.

Here are the women hand balancers. Molly’s counselor, China, is on the bottom.

China was also a part of the acrobatic jump rope. Here she is doing an aerial over the rope.

Hana, another of Molly’s counselors, was a fantastic acrobat up high in the air. Here she is on the Spanish web. She also did the very impressive single trapeze.

After Friday’s final performance, Molly got some pictures with her counselors (Leah and Emmie joined in on some). Here she is with Hana and China.

And with Connor (and his double trapeze partner who was not Molly’s counselor).

Last but not least, here’s Molly’s counselor Thomas. Sadly we did not get to see him on any acts thanks to his broken foot. He normally does the flying trapeze and the tight wire. At least he was healed enough that the doctors let him take off his boot to swim with the kids.

Thomas

The counselors/acrobats were awesome, but they weren’t the only ones showing off their circus skills. More on that next time.

Camp begins

Posted in Family visits, Trip on August 4th, 2015 by c-had – Be the first to comment

Bright and early Monday morning we brought the kids over for camp. Molly headed into the circus tent to join the 7-8 year olds, while the other three headed to the children’s center where the 3-6 year olds gathered. They’ve all got backpacks full of swimwear, sunscreen, and lunch to get them through the day.

Off to camp

After dropping the kids off at camp, all the adults headed over to the big lake to do some kayaking. Here are Jen and I out on the water.

Kayaking

We finished kayaking just in time for me to run over to the tennis courts (well, I rode my bike) and for Jen and Michelle to head to arts and crafts. More on those items in a future post.

Arrival at Callaway

Posted in Family visits on August 2nd, 2015 by c-had – Be the first to comment

The next part of our southern adventure was the longest. We went to Callaway Gardens for their Summer Family Adventure. Jen had come every year for 10 years as a kid, and her parents were eager to go back as soon as their grandkids were old enough. This year we finally made it happen.

The Summer Family Adventure is a family camp. You stay with your family at Callaway (usually in cottages, though we stayed in a big villa to hold all of us). In the morning, the kids go off to camp, with counselors in charge of groups by age. They enjoy lots of activities throughout the day. Parents are then free to do activities of their own, which there are a lot to choose from. At 3:00, you pick up your kids and spend the rest of the day together. There are lots of after camp activities as well, though some times you may want to relax a bit instead.

We arrived at Callaway Saturday afternoon, checked in, and unpacked. Camp didn’t start until Monday, which meant we had some time to ourselves. So, we took the kids to the pool near our villa to cool off.

In case you were wondering, Leah has an outstanding cannonball.

I love her face in this one.

Here I come

Here’s what it looks like after she enters the water.

Emmie got this ring.

Molly’s reaching as far as she can for this ring.

Leah keeps getting better and better at swimming.

Swimming

That wasn’t the only time we went swimming. On Wednesday, we decided to go to a bigger pool, but found that it was very crowded. So, we changed plans and went to the pool near our villa which was not crowded at all. Uncle J was happy to help Leah fly over the pool.

More swimming

But this is only a preview of the Callaway fun. The real action is still to come.

Quick trip to Hilton Head

While in Savannah, we took one afternoon to drive over to Hilton Head to see some of Jen’s cousins (including our flower girl all grown up). They’d moved there a couple of years ago, and this was the first time we managed to pay them a visit. We met them for lunch at a local seafood restaurant, then headed back to their house after the meal.

Cousin visit

It was a hot day, so we were all glad to cool off in the pool.

Here we are with our lovely hosts. Maddie was our flower girl back when she was even younger than Molly is here. Ben was not in our wedding, though, as he was not born yet.

Savannah visit

Last year, after driving 12 hours to Savannah and back for a one day stay, I came up with the idea of combining multiple southern visits into a single trip. That way we’d only have to make the long drive once for several trips. Amazingly, this plan was actually enacted. So, we made the drive down to Savannah to begin the fun.

We brought a bunch of pictures for Grandaddy, and Leah was happy to tell him about them.

While in Savannah, we took advantage of the flat terrain to go for our first ever family bike ride. Most kids take their first long bike ride down a picturesque bluff on the river, right?

Family bike ride

Half way through, we took a break for a drink and a picture. Note the dock far in the background between the girls - that’s Grandaddy’s dock.

Break on the bluff

The bluff is usually pretty empty, but today it was packed. Adam Sandler and David Spade were filming a movie there, so there was crew all over the place. Thankfully they didn’t mind us riding through their set as long as they weren’t filming at that moment.

We spent most of our visit relaxing and visiting. As always, rocking on the dock was delightful.

Happy birthday Grammy

We had another big birthday in our family. Grammy turned 85, and we all gathered together at Grams’s house to celebrate her birthday.

Happy birthday Grammy

Uncle Scott always has something interesting on his phone to show the girls.

Phone time

Dinner was fabulous. It’s great to get us all around Grams’s big dining room table.

Food

For some reason, Grams decided not to put 85 candles on Grammy’s cake.

Missing candles

Uncle Scott had even more to show on his phone.

More phone fun

I call this photo Gramsy ;)

Then it was time to open some presents. This present to her was quite a surprise.

Uncle Scott and Aunt EA are known for musical cards, and they did not disappoint. Leah’s showing Grammy how to make it sing.

It was indeed a fun card.

Miscellaneous grandparent fun

I’ve already written about lots of big fun with grandparents during their visit, but there was smaller fun as well. For instance, there was book reading.

There are a lot of voices in the girls’ usual night time stories. G’Mom and Grampa didn’t know what they were in for when they agreed to read to the girls. Skippyjon Jones is a Siamese cat who wishes he was a Chihuahua, and the books include a lot of Spanish words. It’s a great book, but requires you to really get into the characters.

Night time reading

Leah played some Crazy 8’s with G’Mom and Grampa while Molly was at school on Tuesday.

Card sharks

G’Mom and Grampa went along with Leah to tennis lessons as well.

And there were some presents along the way as well. Here are the girls with their grandparents and their new journals.

Thanks for coming to visit, G’Mom and Grampa!

Strawberry picking

Posted in Family outings, Family visits, Leah, Molly on June 2nd, 2015 by c-had – Be the first to comment

On Memorial Day, Larriland Farm opened their strawberry fields. All of us (G’Mom, Grampa, Jen, Molly, Leah, and I) made the trip to pick a few pounds of them.

Strawberry picking

It’s important to sample the fruit your picking to make sure it is up to your standards.

Taste testing

The girls frequently showed the interesting-looking ones to us.

Look at this one!

You’ve got to get down low to pick strawberries. Consequently, I mostly let everyone else do the picking while I took the pictures.

Down low

Here we all are with our haul. We ended up with 16 pounds which is a lot. Next time, we’ll get more though, as you get a discount if you go over 20 pounds.

Strawberry pickers

After picking the strawberries, we headed to the Red Barn on the farm to see what else they had for sale. The girls got some fudge, and sampled it quickly.

Fudge too

Outside the barn, they had some goats and alpacas that the girls fed. This little alpaca was just the right height for them.

Alpaca

It was a fun (and delicious) morning outing.

Grandparents and baking

Posted in Family visits, Leah, Molly on May 30th, 2015 by c-had – Be the first to comment

G’Mom and Grampa came in town to celebrate Jen’s birthday. After arriving late Friday night, they immediately started baking with the girls Saturday morning. Their first project - chocolate angel food cake for Jen’s birthday.

Grandparent baking

Baking a cake was not enough. So, on Monday they baked some scones with G’Mom as well.

Scones

Yes, there was even more baking. On Tuesday, Leah and G’Mom baked 6 mini-loaves of English muffin bread.

Still more baking

And if that wasn’t enough, Jen immediately followed them up by baking Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. In addition to meals and a few other extras, our kitchen was out of breath by the end of their visit.

A lot more happened during their visit, but I’ll save that for future blog posts.

More fun with cousins

Posted in Family visits, Leah, Molly on May 11th, 2015 by c-had – Be the first to comment

After the big zoo trip, the rest of our cousin fun was smaller and more local. Sunday we went to church, then headed home for some lunch. After lunch, the girls showed Emmie how much fun sledding in warm weather can be when you have a steep enough hill.

Warm weather sledding

Sunday afternoon was beautiful, so we headed to one of the many local playgrounds (this one at Centennial Park) to go to the playground.

Playground visit

After playing outside, we opted for to cool down with a sweet treat. Rita’s Italian ice and custard were perfect.

Thanks for coming to visit us! We look forward to seeing you guys this summer.
