Porch photoshoot

It’s been a while, so we decided to have a photoshoot of the girls out on our porch.

For the photo geeks out there, most of these pictures were taken with my brand new Speed Booster. The head shots were taken with it combined with my Canon FDn 100mm f/2 (making a 71mm f/1.4) and many of the later shots used it combined with my Canon FDn 50mm f/1.4 (making a 35mm f/1.0). That said, I stopped down a good bit on all these to ensure I had enough depth of field for the whole shot.

On to the pictures. First, a head and shoulders shot of Molly.

Photoshoot

Leah is still the queen of silly faces. This can be loads of fun when taking pictures, but sometimes challenging if you just want a simple smile.

Silly girl

Try again for a smile, get a different silly face.

Still silly

We did eventually get a smile.

A smile

Even better. A happy little girl.

Even better

Leah wasn’t excited about sitting in the chair with Molly, but we managed to get her to smile anyway.

Two sisters

A squeeze from a sister.

Squeeze

Molly was happy to give a kiss to her sister. Leah was less happy about receiving it.

I'm generally not a big fan of black and white, but I decided to give it a try here. I'm still not sure about it, though.

An unwanted kiss

Leah didn’t want to hug or kiss, but she was happy to squish faces together.

Face squish

I don’t know why they decided to pucker up here, but I love that Molly went for the “I just ate something sour” look, while Leah went for the pouty face.

Pucker up

Leah’s having fun. Molly’s grin looks a bit evil.

Grinning

The girls then changed from their casual attire into fancy new dresses Jen just made. Here's Leah sporting hers. I think she likes it.

Molly's dress. Looks cute and comfy.

Molly's dress

Molly's getting good at girly poses.

Girly pose

I asked them to stand together, this is what I got. Molly trapping Leah while Leah stiffens in defiance.

Together

I asked the girls to hug, but Leah was not a fan. When Jen asked her why, she said it was because she didn’t want to be shorter than Molly.

Hug

To get Leah to take the previous picture, I promised to let her be the taller one in the next picture.

Now who's taller?

Eventually, we got a picture of both dresses together.

Two dresses

These girls love their dolls, so we made sure to take a picture with them as well.

With dolls

I think we have a winner here. I may be biased, but these are some very cute girls.

Cute sisters

The photo session lasted an hour and forty minutes, so the girls were getting tired by the end. Fortunately, the last pose was a pretty relaxing one.

Tired

To get the girls excited about the photoshoot, I had told them we might go get gelato after we were done if they cooperated (yes, I bribed them). So, as soon as we were done, we headed to Cafe Di Roma for some sandwiches and gelato. Flavors included Birthday Cake for Leah (as usual), Mint Chip for Molly, Cookies and Cream for Jen, and Salted Caramel for me. Yum.

Photo geeks that made it this far - this shot shows off the Speed Booster a bit. That's a 35mm f/1.0 lens stopped down to f/1.2 for razor thin depth of field and the ability to shoot with very little light. I'm looking forward to having more fun with this little guy.

The bribe

Believe it or not, there are even more pictures on Flickr for those who want to see more. I had a lot of fun taking pictures and the girls did a very good job cooperating. I'd also like to thank Jen for being my photo assistant as well as the girls' stylist.

Successful photoshoot for sure– love the dresses! But seriously: the sky/background looks absolutely FAKE in the shot after “Eventually, we got a picture of…” Gorgeous!

emk: Hah! I said the same thing to Jen when looking at these. But no, it’s not fake. Not even adjusted in Photoshop to make the sky pop more. That’s just what the camera got. Of course I did have to balance foreground lights with the background to avoid blowing out the background (the sky is bright), but that’s all I did. The sky just looked like that.

Thanks for indulging this photo geek. 😉 Awesome shots!! I assumed you used a filter in photoshop on the sky. Clearly one shouldn’t assume things.
