We had a slight delimma when it came to the type of lights to be put on our Christmas tree. Chad was in favor of big lights and Jen wanted the mini lights. So, we decided to email some friends and take a vote. Thanks to everyone who gave their opinion. You have helped us start a new tradition!

Our Christmas Tree | The Tree Lights |
The results: |
Big lights = 4 |
|
Little lights = 17 |
We enjoyed reading the different family traditions. Here are a few of the comments we received.

As we researched the scriptures this morning, Andy and I found that by exegetically looking at the Christmas passage, that we believe the Biblical writer was in favor of SMALL White CHRISTMAS LIGHTS!!!!
Just thought you'd like some justification for the argument!
We actually have small white and blue lights on our tree and its beautiful...it just happens to take up half of our apartment! |

Bigger lights are better! Make them all blue and orange! |
Ryan Byars | Most definitely the small lights. Large lights went out in the big hair
80's. The only exception to using small lights on everything, is large
lights are ok to use outside. |
Rachel Whittier | What problems you have! It seems like you had this discussion before, now
that I think of it. I'll have to vote for the little lights, just because
my grandparents used to put those big lights on a tree outside, so they seem
like outside to me. I bet you end up with both of them on your tree anyway. |
Shawn Burnham | You guys are so funny!!! Little lights inside, big lights outside. But
it's really just a matter of tradition. |
Bill Price | I say the big lights without a doubt, My vote should
count twice since I'm such an expert on interior
design! |
Patricia Stevenson | While I like both types of lights very much, my preference is the
mini-lights for the Christmas tree. However, you have to have a lot of
these to make them worthwhile! Forget about the limits listed on the boxes!
I like using some white lights, especially in toward the trunk for depth,
and colored lights as well. The programmable lights mixed in, with
different series of blinks, are especially festive!
As you may recall, we opted to buy the BIG lights for the outside of our
house. While looking somewhat tacky, the lights are exciting to the
children, and you must admit they make it easy to find our house during the
holidays! |

I hope this is the only disagreement you two ever have. :-)
Three things to consider:
1. What look are you going for, trailer park or sophisticated?
2. How big is your tree?
3. How much do you hate your neighbors?
The trailer park look definitely warrants the big lights. Lots of them. And definitely multi-colored. Don’t try to arrange them in any kind of symmetrical arrangement. Just throw them on the tree and get some of those icicles—the ones that get everywhere—to go on the tree, too. They complement each other.
If you’re going for the sophisticated look, you’ll want the small lights. Now, the degree of sophistication you’re aiming for will determine whether colored lights or white lights are warranted. For the more sophisticated look you will need white ones. Don’t even try getting big white ones. Not only does that say, “Haughty trailer trash,” but I’m not sure they even make those. (Who would want them?)
Now, if your tree is small, say 4’, you don’t want big lights period. Even trailer park divas have some sense of size.
If you really don’t care to go for a particular “look,” I suggest pissing off your neighbors. Be sure that you put the tree in a window that will shine directly into your neighbor’s window. And get big lights. Halogen ones. Leave them on all night long. When they complain, say, “You’re oppressing my religious freedom.” That should stave of any calls to the police for at least a few days. For the ultimate in tacky and neighbor-pissing, be sure that you put in the flasher bulb. That screams, “Look at me! I have lights flashing from my living room. Aren’t I special?” |

You two crack me up! My family uses the larger lights
so out of tradition from my family, I'm voting for
those!! |
